Tennis Ball Foot Massage

Our feet carry us through every step of the day, yet they're often of the most overlooked parts of the body.

Whether you've spent the day working, gardening, standing on concrete, or simply walking more than usual, it's normal for your feet to feel tired.

One of my favorite ways to give them a little attention is with something you probably already have at home.... at tennis ball!

The simple self-massage takes just a few minutes & can become a relaxing part of your daily routine.

Why it can feel so good.

The bottom part of your foot contains a thick band of connective tissue called the plantar fascia.

The tissue helps support the arch of your foot & plays an important role every time you stand, walk, or run.

Rolling a tennis ball beneath your foot provides gentle pressure that can:

  • Ease feelings of foot tension

  • Encourage movement of the soft tissues on the bottom of the foot.

  • Increase your awareness of areas that feel particularly tight or sensitive.

  • Feel relaxing after long periods of standing or walking.

Many people also find it to be a calming way to unwind at the end of the day.

How to do a Tennis Ball Foot Massage

You'll need

  • One Tennis ball (or similarly soft massage ball)

  • A chair

Step 1

Sit comfortably in a chair with bot feet flat on the floor

Step 2

Place the tennis ball under one foot.

Step 3

Using gentle pressure, slowly roll the ball from your heel toward your toes.

Take your time.

Move slowly enough that you can notice areas that feel tighter than others.

Step 4

Pause for 10 to 20 seconds over areas that feel especially tender, keeping pressure comfortable.

This should NOT be painful.

Step 5

Continue rolling for 1 to 2 minutes before switching to the other foot.

How often should I do this?

You can do this:

  • After work

  • Before bed

  • After hiking

  • After gardening

  • Following a workout

  • Any time your feet feel tired.

Even a few minutes can be a relaxing addition to your day.

Soul Barn Tip 🌿

Keep a tennis ball beside your favorite chair or under you desk.

When it's easy to see, you're much more likely to use it.

Little wellness habits often become the ones we stick with.

When to Avoid This Exercise

Skip the tennis ball massage if you have:

  • A foot injury

  • Significant swelling

  • An open wound

  • A suspected fracture

  • A severe flare-up of foot pain

If you have diabetes, reduced sensation in your feet, or another medical condition affecting foot health, speak with your healthcare provider before trying self-massage.

If your pain is severe or worsening, or doesn't improve, it's a good idea to seek an assessment from an appropriate healthcare professional.

Lois' Tip!

After using the tennis ball, I like to finish with Barefoot Venus All Cracked Up Foot Balm  and slip on a pair of cozy socks for the evening.

It's an excellent way to keep my feet feeling soft & cared for.
